Legendary for his time both on and off the course, played his entire career as an amateur and retired at the age of 28. In that time he won the US Open four times, and the Open Championship three, along with six amateur championships, which were considered "majors" at the time. He was the first to accomplish the "double" of the US and British Opens in the same year, 1926, and is still the only golfer to win the "grand slam" of the US and British Opens and Amateurs in the same year, 1930. Overall he tallied 13 majors in 20 attempts. With that track record, he is still most revered for co-designing the Augusta National course, and founding the Masters.
