The Scottish member of golf's Great Triumvirate of him, J.H. Taylor and Harry Vardon, was born and worked as a club maker in Earlsferry. He was a five time winner of The Open Championship, and captured the trophy for the British PGA's Matchplay Championship four times. Upon retirement he worked as club professional and designer. He is credited as the inventor of the "dogleg".
